An eastern Kentucky state senator calls it an extremely dangerous situation.

Officials say the city of Benham's water storage tank could collapse which may put lives at risk and endanger the water supply of two communities.

State Senator Daniel Mongiardo is asking Governor Fletcher to declare an emergency and for another storage tank to be constructed.

Cracks, corrosion, and a sinking roof on this water tank is creating fear in one Benham neighborhood.

“I live below- five or six houses below this water tank and each year that goes by it gets more dangerous,” Marcus Ely said.

Mayor John Dodd says a state inspector recently looked at the tank.

“He said the top had dropped about ten inches,” Mayor Dodd said.

Dodd days the inspector also says if the tank isn't replaced, it could collapse sending two-hundred-fifty-thousand gallons of water rushing toward these homes.

“Those people directly across the road would be in dire danger,” Mayor Dodd said.

Dodd says he's contacted Senator Daniel Mongiardo.

“He made an urgent plea to the governor,” Mayor Dodd said.

“That tank is in a crisis situation and it's a threat to the people who live nearby,” Senator Mongiardo said.

Mongiardo says a new tank would cost nearly six-hundred-thousand-dollars.

“In a small town like this you don't have $550,000,” Mayor Dodd said.

“I'm 74-years-old and sometimes you start to thinking… is it flood insurance, disaster insurance--what insurance--what insurance would cover you?” Ely said.

Mayor Dodd says he's done everything he can now he's waiting for results.

A spokesperson for Governor Fletcher says she's not seen Mongiardo's letter yet, but the governor has proposed 25 million dollars in low interest loans and an additional 20 million in grants to come out of the state budget surplus for community needs like this.
