Gas Prices Are Back On The Rise

Many of us have enjoyed paying lower gas prices for months, but recently, they've been going back up.

Now, some people in eastern Kentucky are paying over $2.50 a gallon and prices are expected to go up even more, but why the increase?

In London, prices range from about $2.35 thirty to about $2.45 a gallon and wherever you are, chances are you're paying more for gas.

Transportation experts have told WYMT there are several reasons gas prices are going up.

Barron Farris has to drive a long way to and from work and he's noticed prices going up.

“If you work all week, that's quite a bit of gas you have to spend to fill your car up,” Farris said.

Some drivers say they don't think the prices should be going up in the first place.

“If you watch the market, it hasn't gone up enough to justify the price increase,” Farris said.

A Triple A spokesman says in the past month crude oil prices have jumped from 51 dollars to 62 dollars a barrel and refineries have decreased production causing gas prices to rise, on average, about thirty cents a gallon.

Experts say production usually slows down about this time every year.

“As refineries strive to comply with clean air requirements that affect the way fuel is blended for the summer months,” Jeff Sundstrom said.

Robert Patton says last spring and summer he had to cut down on his travel.

“Last year with the prices up, I didn't do near as much travel to Dale Hollow lake for fishing,” Patton said.

But he says if prices soar again this year, he's not going to let it hold him back. “If so, I'll have to save up because I'm going this time!”

Unfortunately for drivers, transportation experts say with all the spring break trips coming up and the spring and summer travel season approaching that's just going to increase demand for gas and drive up prices even more.
