All five members of an eastern Kentucky water board were removed from office Thursday night.
After the judge-executive accused them of misusing funds.
Four year Magoffin County Water Board member Paul H. Salyer says he and the other four members did their best to make sure all residents had running water, but the Judge-Executive and Fiscal Court thought they misused funds, and voted to remove them from office.
Judge-Executive Charles "Doc" Hardin says the five water board members violated a state law when they gave themselves each a 200 dollar Christmas bonus.
“Not allow you to have a bonus, paid to you by public money,” Judge Hardin said.
“We had no idea that was wrong. When we found out something was wrong, we corrected it and paid the money back,” Salyer said.
Hardin says that wasn't the only problem.
‘One of the board members actually had employees perform on work time, private work for him,” Judge Hardin said.
He alleges Joe Conley used county workers and equipment to connect a water line to his meter at his home, but in county documents, Conley says he paid for the materials and reimbursed the district for the worker's salaries.
“You are not allowed to spend taxpayer's money for private personal gain, and that's what was done in this case,” Judge Hardin said.
Salyer, a former Judge-Executive, thinks the current Judge is just playing politics.
“I don't know a single thing that was wrong, and they didn't prove anything wrong,” Salyer said.
But Hardin disagrees. Now the ousted water board members can only appeal the decision in court.
The former water board members have ten days to file an appeal in circuit court.
The fiscal court already chose a new water board, and they can take begin their duties in the next month.
