Mother May Face Charges For Leaving Children In SUV

A Mercer County teacher could faces charges of wanton endangerment after police say she left her two young children inside her SUV for hours.

Police say Kristy Drakeford left 2-year-old Anna Kate and 4-month-old Ashton strapped in their car seats all day yesterday in the hot sun.

Drakeford is a first grade teacher at Harlow Elementary in Harrodsburg.

Police broke a window to get the children of the hot SUV after a bus driver picking students up spotted the kids.

The school's principal says when Drakeford learned what had happened, she ran outside where she became hysterical and fainted.

The children were rushed to the hospital, but are said to be doing fine. They have been removed from their mother's care as the investigation moves forward.

Drakeford is currently on paid suspension from the school, pending the outcome of the investigation. The superintendent says all signs right now point to an accident.
