A Floyd County Sheriff's Deputy is recovering after an accident involving a tractor trailer on U.S. 23 Wednesday morning.

Officer Terry Chaffins was on his way to Betsy Layne Elementary for a DARE presentation when police say a truck turned left in front of him.

Officers say Chaffins went to a hospital, but he does not have life-threatening injuries.

Other deputies say Chaffins did all he could to avoid hitting the truck.

“He came up on this tractor trailer that had pulled out in front of him, went to the shoulder of the roadway in an attempt to avoid the tractor trailer, striking the front tandems on the front side of the trailer,” Trooper Shaun Little said.

“He's lucky, he's lucky, if he'd a hit underneath the frame, there's not telling what would have happened. He just got lucky he hit the wheel,” Deputy Greg Clark said.
