Fire Burns Church To The Ground

Police and fire officials are investigating a fire that that burned a church to the ground in Lee County.

Members of the small congregation say they probably won't be able to build again.

“I'd say 67 years I went to that church,” Edith Little said.

Edith Little drew a picture of the St Helen's Presbyterian Church many years ago and now, very little is left of the church she loved so much.

“You think of all the things that happened there and the things that you've down and we always said, I want this pew and I want this table and now there just nothing,” Little said.

Officials say the fire started sometime before 11:30 Wednesday morning.

Emma Sue Marshall called 911 from her store next door, but the church burned up to the steeple too quickly.

“It was simple pine construction on the inside. The wine got up and under it and it went to the ground,” Marshall said

The congregation has less than 10 members in regular attendance and some say that's not enough to rebuild.

“I will say we will disband, of course we only have six, we're all old and I don't think we can go through building another church,” Little said.

Kentucky State Police are calling the blaze suspicious and it's making neighbors worry.

“I hate to think that it would be, but this day in time honey you never know,” Marshall said.

Edith Little knows the joy of walking through those church doors is gone, “The hardest part is thinking of the way it used to be.”

She says no flames could ever burn out those memories.

Kentucky State Police investigators say they are waiting for lab tests to come back to help determine the cause of the fire, but they are calling it suspicious at this time.
