Red Cross Chapter Wants To See What You Can Fit Into A Brown Bag

They are ready when the unexpected happens, but one eastern Kentucky Red Cross Chapter needs help, after several months full of emergencies.

The question that Red Cross officials have for you is how much can you fit in a brown bag?

That's how Breathitt County Red Cross Volunteers are showing people just how little a family has after a tragedy.

It's been a difficult year of unexpected tragedies in Breathitt County.

“After the plane crash, we were serving food to rescuers on site, and in 22 minutes, we were ready,” Sarah Wolfe said.

The August crash killed family of seven from Texas, but the local rescue workers and officials needed help during the investigation because it put a strain on local Red Cross funds.

In past years, the Breathitt County Chapter has pitched in on national disasters like Hurricane Katrina learning just what it means to have nothing.

Every year, single family disasters cost thousands of dollars.

“Already this year we've had 6 house fires, so it looks like it's going to be another stressful year,” Fire Chief Roger Friley said.

“The flood coming up that always hit Breathitt County, so we have to have the money to be able to serve these people,” Sarah Wolfe Jr. said.

They know if it continues, they'll be short on cash.

They say everything you donate can help fill up much more than a brown bag.
