Noted Appalachian Author Endorses Miller in Governor's Race

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Appalachian writer Silas House has endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Miller in the May 22 primary election, the campaign announced Friday.

House, author of "Clay's Quilt" and "The Coal Tattoo," and Miller both oppose a form of coal mining known as "mountaintop removal." That process involves using explosives and heavy machinery to take off mountaintops to remove coal.

"I think to stop apathy and to get young people more excited about politics, we have to have a candidate like Jonathan Miller who is standing up and saying things that the other candidates are not, who is brave and saying what he believes in," House said in a statement. "But that's the kind of candidate that young people can get passionate about, and, therefore, they can be passionate about politics and making a change and making a difference."

Miller spokeswoman Carol Andrews said the campaign is excited to get the endorsement of House, a resident of rural Laurel County.
