Nurse Accused Of Sexually Abusing Teenage Patient

The Trillium Center at Baptist Regional Medical Center is where troubled teens go to get help. But last spring police say a 14-year-old started a closer than normal relationship with her nurse, Barbara Pielack.

Police say once the teenager's treatment was done, Pielack took the young girl home with her. That's when the 57-year-old woman and her 64-year-old live in boyfriend, James Thornton allegedly sexually abused the young girl at least 12 times from May to August.

Neighbor Arthur Shephard says he first thought Pielack brought the girl home as part of her treatment.

“Never spoke of either one doing anything to her; I talked to the girl, my sons talked to the girl,” says Shephard.

Police say once the pair learned they were under investigation they headed for Georgia and once they got there, Pielack got another job at a hospital again as a nurse.

That was in November. They were indicted in December and police spent four months trying to find them.

“Sometimes it takes awhile to find these people when they (run) from jurisdiction and it took from December to February to locate their whereabouts,” says State Police Trooper Don Trosper.

The pair is only accused of abusing one teenager, but court records say that Pielack allegedly used her role as nurse to recruit children for her sexual pleasure.

Sexual predators cannot be "sniffed out" they look and act like everyone else, with the acception of being sexually interested in children. It is sick that she took advatage of her position to gain this girls' trust. They both should have their foreheads tattoed with the word "rapist". So then everyone would know what these people do!

What's the comment about the 14 year old starting a closer than normal relationship with the nurse? What an the 14 year old started it? please people. The man and woman must have decieved the poor girl or threatened's not the girls fault at all! It shouldn't be made to look like that should it?

Was this woman not portraying stange behavior to other staff members and supervisors? Maybe this treatment center does need to replace its supervisors with ones that are trained to sniff out sex offenders!!!

This is the sickest of all things. I mean what in the world were people thinking of letting this woman take the girl home? I have had a family member in there and very well could have been her that this happened to. So now we can't trust hospitals either. What is this world coming to and where the hell were the parents? It is a crying shame!! Who authorized this anyway? Does anyone know or just not telling?

Where were social services? If the girl was permitted to go with nurse without either parental approval or social service involvement, the hospital should be held responsible.

Oh my, I lived right next door to these people about 3 years ago and I never would have dreamed they were doing things like that. Its just a shock. but I agree something needs to be done about it.

Where was this little girls parnets when the nurse took her home? Did they not go and see her to check on her? Also, The supervisor should take some blame for not watching after her staff. This world is a mess.

Where were the girl's parents? Why would a nurse be permitted to take this girl home with her? To keep her for several months... It is not all the Supervisors fault, it is others as well. Where is the childs family? Why would a family let a stranger keep this child at all, not mention for several months....

Some people in Corbin do not have any other choice but to send their children there. It's not like Lexington, a treatment center on every corner we can't pick and choose in this small town unfortunately!! But we can FIRE supervisors for not doing their jobs properly!!! And that's what should be done!!!!
