A serious crash on Interstate 75 injured five people Friday night. It happened in the northbound lanes just outside Mount Vernon in Rockcastle county. State police say a driver carrying four passengers lost control of his car. It flipped several times. Three people were thrown from the vehicle. Another person was trapped inside. Four helicopters were brought in to take the victims to area hospitals. There's no word on their conditions. I-75 was closed for a short time while crews cleared the scene. Police are investigating the crash.
Police made the following release to NEWSFIRST:
On Friday, November 20, 2009, at 8:35 PM the Kentucky State Police, Post 11 London, received a report of a single vehicle traffic crash, with injury, on I-75 in Rockcastle County near the 61 mile marker.
Upon arrival Trooper Coby Smith determined that a silver 2003 GMC Envoy SUV was southbound on I-75 when, for an unknown reason, it went out of control, striking the median barrier cable and overturned.
Three of the five vehicle occupants were ejected from the vehicle.
The driver, front passenger and one of the other passengers were flown from the scene to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington for treatment of their injuries.
The others were transported to the Rockcastle County Hospital for treatment. Conditions are unknown at this time.
Seat belts were not in use by the three that were ejected but were in use by the other two.
The victims’ identities are being withheld at this time pending notification of family.
Alcohol and / or drug usage is not suspected at this time.
Trooper Smith is continuing the investigation and was assisted, at the scene, by the Rockcastle County Sheriff’s Office, the Mount Vernon Police Department, the Rockcastle County Fire / Rescue and the Rockcastle County EMS.
