FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Governor Fletcher has asked for federal
assistance for Kentucky farmers whose crops were hurt earlier this
month by cold weather.
Fletcher sent a letter to U-S Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns
and requested disaster assistance because Kentucky farmers lost
their crops during a dip in temperatures from April Fifth to Tenth.
The Kentucky Agriculture Department estimates that the weather
could cost farmers at least 45 (M) million dollars in damages. Some
of the crops damaged by the freeze included alfalfa, barley,
peaches, apples, berries and wheat. Central Kentucky vineyards were
also hurt.
