Teenager Shot And Killed By Police Officer

A police officer who killed a teenager after the boy fled the scene of a reported break-in had been involved in a previous fatal shooting, a spokesman said.

Evan Harlow, 16, died Monday after being shot more than once, deputy Coroner Larry Carroll said.

Louisville Metro Police Officer Tom Hodgkins, who shot Harlow, fatally shot another person in 2003 while investigating a home invasion, police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said.

Hodgkins shot Harlow after he and Officer Michael Perry responded to call at 7:45 p.m. EDT about a break-in at a home in eastern Louisville, Mitchell said.

The officers were confronted by two teenage boys at the home when they arrived, Mitchell said. One of the boys was apprehended there, but the other ran, Mitchell said.

Hodgkins chased Harlow on foot for about a mile into a wooded area and when the teen produced a handgun, the officer fired, killing the boy, Mitchell said.

Hodgkins was placed on administrative leave while the Louisville
Metro Police Public Integrity Unit investigated the shooting, Mitchell said.

Hodgkins acted appropriately in 2003 when he killed Derek Jaggers, 27, during a robbery attempt at a home, according to a police investigation at the time, Mitchell said.

The investigation showed Hodgkins acted to save the life of the
homeowner, who had a gun held to her head, Mitchell said.

im so tired of looking on the internet and seeing comments from people saying its evans fault he was killed. i can almost guarentee you didnt know him. he was at my house two hours before that cop took his life away. him and my buddy nick called me to chill and of course i wasnt by my phone. its hard for me to just wake up every morning living without him. he was my hero and will continue to be hero till the end of time. evan had so much potential, he lit up the room when he walked in. to this day i cant accept the fact that hes gone. but i hope he knows me and many others are stilling living for him. i pass up his cross every day when im going to school and work and i always throw the dueces to him. he was a true solider and i know if that cop let him have a second chance he would of made it extremely far in life. honestly, i would of rather it been me who was laid to rest. i would of done anything to keep evan here. its not fair that he had to go, he just turned 16.. he was a kid.

listen... for all of you who did not know evan harlow you need to be respectful for those of us who did including myself. It is so hard losing someone like him because he was one in a million. there is no other person lik evan. you need to shut you mouths because in the police report the gun he had was found 6 YARDS away from his body... answer me this question. how in the hell could he have shot at the officer when the gun was found that far away from were he died.. you cant... so have some respect and keep your rude comments to yourself. No one wants to hear them to be honest.. RIP to ther late great evan harlow.
