Teenager Shot And Killed By Police Officer

A police officer who killed a teenager after the boy fled the scene of a reported break-in had been involved in a previous fatal shooting, a spokesman said.

Evan Harlow, 16, died Monday after being shot more than once, deputy Coroner Larry Carroll said.

Louisville Metro Police Officer Tom Hodgkins, who shot Harlow, fatally shot another person in 2003 while investigating a home invasion, police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said.

Hodgkins shot Harlow after he and Officer Michael Perry responded to call at 7:45 p.m. EDT about a break-in at a home in eastern Louisville, Mitchell said.

The officers were confronted by two teenage boys at the home when they arrived, Mitchell said. One of the boys was apprehended there, but the other ran, Mitchell said.

Hodgkins chased Harlow on foot for about a mile into a wooded area and when the teen produced a handgun, the officer fired, killing the boy, Mitchell said.

Hodgkins was placed on administrative leave while the Louisville
Metro Police Public Integrity Unit investigated the shooting, Mitchell said.

Hodgkins acted appropriately in 2003 when he killed Derek Jaggers, 27, during a robbery attempt at a home, according to a police investigation at the time, Mitchell said.

The investigation showed Hodgkins acted to save the life of the
homeowner, who had a gun held to her head, Mitchell said.
