Police Say Woman Lied About Tragedy To Get Money

Just one week after a tragic accident took the lives of Melanie Wise and her three children, police say a woman tried to profit from their deaths.

36-year-old Connie Frances Long was arrested on three counts of theft of identity without consent and is being held in the Marion County Detention Center.

Investigators tell 27 NEWSFIRST Long lied when she told people she was the sister of Curtis Wise, Melanie Wise's husband and the father of their three children who died in the accident.

Victims of the scam told police that Long said she was collecting money to pay for funeral expenses. Police received numerous phone calls about the suspicious request and confirmed through the Wise family that Long was not related to them.

It's unknown at this time how much money Long collected during her alleged one-week scam, police say that is still under investigation.

Long will be arraigned in Marion County Court Friday or Monday.

If you have any information regarding this matter you should call the Marion County Sheriff Department or The Lebanon Police Department.

This woman (Connie Frances Long) should have to spend at least a year of her life in county jail so she can sit and think just how stupid her actions were. She obviously has no heart therefore 365 days in the "pokey" ought to straighten her out a little. However I doubt the judicial system will see it my way. She'll walk "AFTER" a slap on the wrist!!!

That was such a hard thing for the Wise and Moore family to have to go thru. However with the foolish act that Connie did makes it even worse...I put her away for a while...its such a shame to know what people will try to do for money.

I do not personally know Ms. Long or the families involved in this terrible loss. Therefore my opinion is truly one of just a member of this shocked community. Never will I be convinced that this act by Ms Long was due to a drug addiction or anything other than just an evil intention. We are talking about a plan that was devised to prey on the heartache of a close community for personal gain. There are numerous churches in this area that would of helped with financial needs if Ms. Long had truly been in legimate need of assistance. We are not talking about someone that performed a random desperate act to gain funds. After reading so much about the faith of the Wise and Moore families they probably are aready praying for Ms. Long. She needs to realize how cruel her act truly was. To all reading this please know that Ms. Long is not an example of how the people in this community respond to victims of tragedy. The majority of us continue to pray for healing for the families, the community, and yes for Ms. Long to show in some way her regret for this injustice.

This woman should be put away for life. For someone to be so disgustingly sick to do something like this after someone loses their family is the most devious act anyone could do!!!

I work with Curtis and I knew what a great person he was and I am sorry I never got to meet his family. However, I have been keeping up with their story as it was a tragic blow to all of us here in Michigan who know Curtis. I still am troubled by the whole accident as I can't shake the pain everyone there must be going through. Then to here a story like this about this woman trying to steal his family's identity after the worse news I think I have ever heard is apalling. I am beside myself how this woman could even phamton this idea after what happened. I am a church goer and I know a black heart when I see one and this woman has one.
