Yellow Bikes Ready For Riding

There's a new way to get around downtown Lexington. A new program called yellow bikes is designed to get downtown drivers out from behind the wheel and onto bikes.

For 10 dollars you can become a lifetime member and take one of the bikes for a spin any time you want from April to October in the downtown area.

Those who want to ride the bikes should sign up and pay the fee at Pedal Power Bike Shop, the High Street YMCA, Downtown Lexington Corp., or at Thursday Night Live, held 5-7 p.m. every Thursday from June to August in Cheapside Park.

Yellow Bikes riders are encouraged to keep the bikes in the downtown area. After a person is done with the bike they are supposed to lock it up at the downtown tracks. The bikes have baskets for holding purses, briefcases, and packages.

Good grief, people. Get your facts straight before opening fire. This is NOT a taxpayer-funded project. It's a GIFT from the private sector utilizing public streets. Those who purchase keys must sign a liability waiver. The intent is to open our eyes to the wasteful sedentary lifestyles that are perpetuating our sicko co-dependence with the Middle East while keeping us stuck among the unhealthiest populations in the country. Beyond that, lighten up, for heaven's sake!

Oh come on! It doesn't matter if the bikes are all stolen in 2 weeks. I mean its all about good intentions right? Afterall, its only tax payer money. I'm just glad our city government is busy getting these bikes than spending time messing up something important....right?

I just wonder how many of these bikes will never end up back where they're supposed to!!!! I love the idea but I am afraid too many "thiefs" will have a field day.

Now just how long do you think this is going to last?? These bikes will all be stolen within 2 weeks. Who was the Einstein who came up with this???
