Anne Northup Combs Conservative Southeastern Kentucky For Votes

BRODHEAD, Ky. (AP) - Judy Baker is not unlike her neighbors in
her heavily Republican southeastern Kentucky town.
A conservative Christian, she supports only like-minded
political candidates, those who take strong stands on moral issues.
She especially likes those who are willing to proclaim their
opposition to abortion and gambling.
She says she doesn't think gubernatorial incumbent Ernie
Fletcher has done a bad job.
G-O-P challenger Anne Northup, a former congresswoman from
Louisville, says Fletcher has been politically weakened by a hiring
investigation. Northup says she is the only Republican who can win
election in November. The other G-O-P challenger, Paducah
businessman Billy Harper, also says he entered the race in part
because Fletcher can't win against Democrats.
