LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Ernie Fletcher overcame a troublesome political scandal to win the Republican nomination in his bid for re-election, accomplishing what some critics had thought impossible.

Fletcher, who was indicted last May in an alleged scheme to reward political supporters with protected state jobs, withstood challenges by former U.S. Rep. Anne Northup of Louisville and millionaire businessman Billy Harper of Paducah.

With 96 percent of precincts reporting, Fletcher had 94,609 votes or 51 percent, to Northup's 66,554 votes or 36 percent. Harper had 24,273 votes or 13 percent.

Fletcher's November opponent will be former Lt. Gov. Steve Beshear, who emerged from a crowded Democratic field and avoided a June 26 runoff that would have been triggered if no candidate got at least 40 percent.

"Well I guess we've answered the electability question," a beaming Fletcher said at his victory party, referring to statements made by both GOP challengers that he couldn't win re-election.

Northup called him shortly before 9 p.m. EDT to congratulate him on the victory.

"He'll go into the election with broad support across the state," Northup said of Fletcher.

The fractious GOP primary brightened Democrats' hopes of recapturing the governor's office.

Most observers predicted the crowded race would go to a June 26 runoff, but Beshear narrowly avoided it.

Besides Beshear, the primary involved three major Democratic candidates: millionaire businessman Bruce Lunsford, House Speaker Jody Richards and former Lt. Gov. Steve Henry. Two other Democrats, Lexington attorney Gatewood Galbraith and Harlan County demolition contractor Otis Hensley, ran limited campaigns.

With 96 percent of precincts reporting, Beshear had 135,046 votes or 41 percent to Lunsford's 70,188 votes or 21 percent. Henry had 55,146 votes or 17 percent and Richards had 42,938 votes or 13 percent.

Congratulations Governor Fletcher! You have proven that campaigning on the issues and accomplishments of your administration resonates with the people of Kentucky. I cant wait until November when Kentucky Wins with Ernie Fletcher and Robbie Rudolph.

Well, the traitor, Steve Pence, helped his candidate lose the race for Governor with his nasty, untruthful comments. Guess he will think TWICE about that again. And, Bruce Lunsford could possibly have won the Democratic nod, had he NOT asked the Polital Hack, STUMBO to be his running mate. Yesterday's Primary Election has restored my faith in the voters of Kentucky, and when we work hard to re-elect the BEST governor in MANY, MANY YEARS...ERNIE FLETCHER.....in November.....it will restore it to the fullest. Let's go everyone and start the campaign trail to re-elect a real man for Governor....ERNIE FLETCHER!!!!

No Jason, he is not only a doctor, but he is also a minister with no church and a fighter pilot who kept the Viet Cong out of Kentucky and now he is a politican. I see a pattern here, he can't seem to keep a job!

Fletcher is not a career politician, he is a doctor who got pulled into politics by those around him, and decided to do it to make changes, which he has

Please Spike Lee; learn to type without your caps lock on. It is very irritating. I don't like either Beshear or Fletcher; career politicians don't enthuse me one bit. And yes Ron, he does look like Mr. Burns.

I am very glad that Democrats have come togather all across the stase and showed that they mean business. This showes that Kentucky is in need of change and fast. If Democrats stay togather kentucky will win. Congrats. to Steve Beshear

Is it just me or does Steve Beshear look like Mr. Burns from the Simpsons?

Steve Beshear for Gov....... We need a REAL change in Frankfort....

Posted by: Paul Location: Lexington on May 23, 2007 at 10:05 AM
I expect if a Democrat is elected Governor that after what Stumbo got Flecther in trouble for that we will see more Republican Government workers hired. Right now there is clearly a majority of Demecrats workers in government

Fletcher just pleaded the fifth because he was innocent of all charges. Just like he said, they were all just misdemeanors anyway. It's just like noddling out of season. Misdemeanors are only a crime if committed by the average person. What a crock!

Remember when Patton cried when he told us "I have been to the mountain" and then went on to tell us he and the other democratic leaders had spent us nearly into bankruptcy? Remember how it appeared the only option was higher (and higher, and higher) taxes for all? In three short years Governor Fletcher has turned all this around, going from the largest deficit we have seen to an actual surplus, all the while Stumbo was trying to finance his political future at the expense of the citizens of Kentucky. If running the state into bankruptcy is your idea of great leadership, vote Democrat.

I hope you guys are happy. You keep complaining for a change and you don't change a thing. Business as usual in Frankfort.

I am also glad that Fletcher won...Now it stage it set for democrats to take back Frankfort and get rid of that crook. GO BESHEAR!!! GO DEMOCRATS!!!

Gov. Fletcher's best chance for re-election will come in making casino gambling the central issue and by making his personal view against it as his public policy view. He needs to get off the fence on this issue and stand up to Mr. Beshear. With his help, the idea will at least be set aside for another four years, sparing a lot of families much pain and suffering.

Max, if thats what makes him dishonest you have your priorities mixed up! what of his legal problems over the last few years? I guess thats okay, as long as he lowers those taxes! gosh, god knows we dont need new roads, new schools, or those pesky fire and police stations or hospitals! yay low taxes! haha! Fletcher and the other CRIMINALS involved in politics in this country will soon will the wreckening... of the peoples laws in this fine country for the people and by the people. not rich corporate elitest. Save our state, vote the cronnies out! The dems just did by nominating Beshear. now that dirty lundsford and henry can go back to their mansion and cry with ole jerry lundergun about how they cant make millions off innocent people with political help! kentucky won all around tonite and they will in november when they vote fletcher out!

Fletcher took Kentucky's billion dollar deficit and turned it into a surplus in just three years, without raising taxes. All the while Stumbo was spending millions trying to get these trumped up indictments. It was like Democrats were trying to turn the focus off of all the good this administration has done. Any governor in the past has given jobs to people and tried to surround himself or herself with like minded persons. Ernie is the best thing going in KY and I grew up in Dawson Springs, home of Steve Beshear. Talk about taxing the poor! I'm not willing to take THAT GAMBLE!

Posted by: Jeannie Location: Winchester, KY on May 22, 2007 at 11:31 PM
You need to wake up and face reality, Jonathan D. If you actually kept track of the governor and the job he's done, I wonder if you would rethink the adjectives you use to describe his work. Yes, there are some things he is "great" at. But those things are not "great" for the Commonwealth. Can you say "pardons"? He's real good at handing out those.

Congrats to Steve Beshear. Kentuckys only hope for expanded gaming in Kentucky. It will be nice to see all our tax dollars not cross that bridge in Louisville. Good luck in Nov. we will be pulling for you.

It appears the Republicans in KY are as whacked out as Fletcher is. I'm surprised he didn't invent the internet (sorry, my bad, Al Gore did according to him). I'm sorry but if Lying Ernie is the best the Republicans have to run for governor this year we are in trouble......

Why did the Commonwealth legislature enact a run off statue? Are we trying to look like Mississippi?

Posted by: Jonathan D. Location: London, Kentucky on May 22, 2007 at 09:30 PM
Congratulations Ernie Fletcher for getting the Republican Nomination for KY Governor. I wish you the best of luck in the fall and I will be voting for you again then. Hope you can get re-elected to accomplish more great work for the state of Kentucky like you have done already.

I voted for Ernie and I liked him.Now it is time for him to give us a break on taxes. He said, when he became govenor that he would give us a break, so him not doing so makes him somewhat dishonest!!!
