FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A Republican candidate for state treasurer
has asked for a recanvass of yesterday's vote. The request is from
state Representative Lonnie Napier, who was locked in a tight race
with former state court administrator Melinda Wheeler. With 99
percent of precincts reporting, Wheeler held a slim lead with
54-thousand, 518 votes, or 32 percent. Napier had 53-thousand, 433
or 31-point-five percent.
Ken Upchurch had 21 percent and Brandon Smith 15 percent.
Napier says if any problems appear as a result of the recanvass,
he may ask for either a statewide recount or possibly ask certain
counties to total their votes again.
Napier said (in these words) "I'm not ready to throw in the
towel yet."
Brett Hall, a spokesman for Wheeler, said a recanvass and
possibly a recount won't change the outcome of the race. Hall said
it is within Napier's rights to ask.
Democrat Todd Hollenbach won the Democratic nomination.
