The Memorial Day weekend took a tragic turn in Southern Kentucky when a 17-year-old Pulaski County boy died in a crash.

Brandon Merritt's girlfriend was driving his pickup truck to see his parents when she lost control on Clifty Road just outside of Somerset. Merritt was thrown from the truck, then it flipped over on top of him. Richard Humble tells 27 NEWSFIRST he heard the crash and rushed to the scene. He and half a dozen others worked to free Merritt, but it was too late.

Merritt was rushed to Cumberland Hospital where he was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma to the chest. Merritt's girlfriend, 17 year old Tiffany Price, was also taken to the hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

Merritt was a Junior at Southwestern High School in Pulaski County.
