A child is kidnapped; it's many parents worst nightmare.

On Tuesday a Hazard man was arrested for trying to take an eight year old girl.

Police say Charles Hitzeman tried to lure a little girl into his car with money, but her grandmother was standing by and scared him away.

Many kids are out of school for the summer and having a lot of fun, but just like the little girl Wednesday, who police say was approached by a stranger, there's nothing separating any child from the danger of a predator except making good choices.

“We never go anywhere without watching our kids,” Leslie Melton said.

Things every parent and babysitter knows, “We try to teach them to love one another but not get too close,” Marla Brotherton said.

“They've told me like, not to go off too far, because kidnappers or you could see them anytime and they may look like normal people and try to kidnap you,” Sarah Miller said.

The little girl that police say, a total stranger, 36 year old Charles Hitzeman, tried to kidnap Tuesday, knew all the signs too.

Knowing the signs didn’t keep her from being approached, even with her grandmother standing by.

Police say she refused to get too close to the strange car and turned down his offers for money, that's what officials say makes the difference.

Communicating seemingly simple tips to your kids could make the difference.

1. Don't go anywhere alone.
2. Say no to strangers.
3. Stand back from suspicious people and cars.
4. If the worst happens, make a scene to get someone else's attention.

“A lot of times these tips will act as a deterrent,” Trooper Tony Watts said.

For older kids, police say parents should keep an extra eye on kid’s activity on the internet since they have extra time on their hands this summer.

Charles Hitzeman is still in jail and he's scheduled to be arraigned in Perry District Court.
