'Not Guilty' Plea Entered By Former Case Worker

LEXINGTON, AP) - A plea of not guilty has been entered in Lexington by a former case worker at the Federal Medical Center to charges she had an 18-month sexual relationship with an inmate and then lied to federal agents about it.

Kathleen Spanyer did not comment as she left federal court in Lexington yesterday after her first court appearance on two charges. They were giving a false statement to a federal officer and abuse of a ward. If convicted on both counts, Spanyer could receive a maximum of 20 years in prison. The federal sentencing guidelines are no longer mandatory, and it is unlikely Spanyer would receive the maximum sentence if convicted.

The 44-year-old Spanyer is the third staff person at the Federal Medical Center in three years to be charged with having sexual relations with an inmate. It is not clear what Spanyer's duties were or when she left her job at the prison, which specializes in inmates with medical needs.

Age of consent, broke a rule, no one hurt...imprisonment? Give me a break. Fred, the guy wasn't 13 or 14, and personally if I had a wife in prison that was having sex with a guard and got pregnant, I'd be more pissed at her than him. This is a ridiculous waste of time, you guys are so right. Concentrate on our real problems!

I agree with Winchester and Jody... They are both grown adults even if one of them was incarcerated and the other a fed. staff member. She shouldn't have lied and maybe it was wrong having sex with him but get a grip... We have worse problems in the state of KY then this... Fire her and send her home!

I'm tired of 35 or 40 year old women teachers having sex with 13 or 14 year old boys and getting a slap on the wrist! But when a 35 or 40 year old man has sex with a 15 year old girl people are ready to kill the guy. What is the difference? She worked in the prison system. There are rules against this sort of thing and she knowingly broke them she should've been fired and imprisoned if she didn't take the cowards way out and kill her self. Hey laughing would you think it was fuuny if your wife was in prison and she had sex with a guard and then find out he got her pregnant. Would you be laughing then?

it's not for any of us to judge what someone else is going through- obviously this poor woman was very sick, and her family must be devastated enough without such unkind comments.

I almost agree with the Winchester person. Fire her let her go. After all our court system has too many serious cases to worry about. As long as no one was hurt--The penalty is to much. Let's concentrate on killings, robberies, drugs......Send her home and let it be.

Let her be... Heck she might not be able to get some from anyone else and she is doing a service to the guy behind bars... maybe she shouldn't have lied about it but wouldn't anyone lie in those circumstances...
