Campaign: Fletcher Would Work Against Gambling Amendment

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Governor Fletcher's campaign manager says the governor has taken a stronger stand against casino gambling. Fletcher's challenger in the fall general election Democrat Steve Beshear supports efforts to legalize casino gambling in Kentucky.

Ryall said Fletcher has personally opposed the issue, and the fall election should be a referendum on the matter. Ryall says voters who support legalized gambling should support Beshear, while those who oppose the idea should cast their votes for Fletcher.

In the past, Fletcher has said he personally opposed legalized casino gambling, but would not work against it.

Beshear spokesman Robert Kellar says the governor has been -- quote -- "wildly inconsistent" -- unquote -- on the issue.

Casino gambling is not a fix-all for every single spending problem that the Commonwealth could have. Beshear is proposing a lot of these new programs, which would be wonderful programs, but he wants to support it all on casino gambling, which is an unstable revenue. There's no way that he could pay for all of this with gambling, so he would be forced to raise taxes, and could potentially pour our budget down the drain trying to keep his programs afloat. Fletcher has turned our budget around, gave us a surplus, and did it without raising taxes. He's also streamlined the government, cut the number of state cabinets and eliminated government waste. Beshear will create government waste with these programs and his gambling. He'll eventually have to raise taxes, and I can't support any of that. Leave it to Fletcher to do anything (including flip-flopping on the issues) to get re-elected. Too little too late Ernie. Anyone who changes course after the primary but before the general election like this shows that they only pander to polling and could care less about doing the right thing.
