Dangers Of Repossessing Cars

"I had somebody actually pull a gun on me."

Coby Sparks has been repossessing cars for a living for 30 years.

"I've always been worried about my safety."

But after learning David Smith was killed while repossessing a car last night, safety has become even more of a priority. Sparks works for Tri City Auto and says if someone defaults on a car loan they are given several chances to make it right before their car is repossessed. At Tri City they keep master keys for all the vehicles they sell in the event they have to take it back.

"If you've got a good set of keys then we just walk up to the vehicle and just take off with it. Sometimes you may get away with it. Sometimes you may not."

He says sometimes car owners will come out and confront them, thinking they are stealing the car, and that is where the risk comes in. But Sparks says what happened last night should have never happened, even if the car was being stolen.

"It doesn't give somebody the right to kill somebody."

People running their mouths over stuff they have no idea about, I bet he gets plenty of time in prison for this, alot more than a slap on the wrist. Talking about if it were a white man killing a black man, it wouldn't make a difference if it were 2 whites or 2 blacks, what happen was just wrong. It was wrong on both sides the way things were handled. Both men made STUPID decisions!!!

POLICE WILL NOT INVOLVE THEMSELVES WITH REPOSSESSIONS IT IS A CIVIL MATTER. MOST COMPANIES TRY SEVERAL TIMES TO REACH AN INDIVIDUAL ABOUT DEFAULT IN PAYMENTS. MOST OF THE TIME THEY ARE AVOIDED AND THREATENED. HAVING MONEY INVESTED IN SOMETHING FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO DRIVE AROUND IN FOR FREE IS REDICULOUS. IF YOU ARE BEHIND IN YOUR CAR PAYMENT AND HAVE MADE NO ATTEMPT TO GET AN EXTENSION ON THE BILL YOUR CAR IS GOING TO BE REPOSSESSED. THIS IS AMERICA AND NOTHING COMES FREE. THIS GUY KNEW HIS CAR WAS UP FOR REPOSSESSION AS DO 90% OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T PAY THEIR BILLS. THE SUSPECT UNLOADED HIS GUN ON THE VICTIM NOT ONE SHOT BUT 6 SHOTS. 3 OF WHICH HIT HIM IN THE BACK OF HIS HEAD. HE WAS TRYING TO MAKE A DOLLAR JUST LIKE THE REST OF US. HOW ANYBODY COULD EVEN ATTEMPT TO JUSTIFY THIS IS BEYOND ME. AND YES IT IS TRUE IF IT WERE A BLACK VICTIM AND A WHITE PERSON PULLING THE TRIGGER "HATE CRIME" WOULD BE STRUNG ACROSS THE TELEVISION. AND HONESTLY BECAUSE HE'S A BLACK MAN HE WILL BE RELEASED WITH HARDLY A SLAP ON THE WRIST.

I think when they come and repo the car or truck, they need to have some kind of a paper to prove that it has been repo and have the law enforcment with them too. This situation like this can be prevent from being gunning down. show them you are their to repo the car not stealing, without the paper i would think you are stealing my car, If you have a paper and the law enforcement with you then you will be okay and take the car peacefully with out any trouble.
