Cold Winter Weather Brings in More People to Homeless Shelters

In addition to the snow, we are in store for another extended period of bitter cold temperatures, with wind chills in the single digits!

It seems like it's getting colder by the minute out here, and workers at a homeless shelter in hazard are trying to make sure nobody has to be outside all night.

The Corner Haven Shelter in Hazard is helping people who are looking for a way out of the cold.

“We have bed availability and if we have to, we have cots we can put down for folks who need to come in out of the cold,” Case Manager Jenny Lewis says.

The executive director of Hazard Perry county Community Ministries says they've helped more people recently due to the harsh winter.

“We’ve been confronting homelessness in the last several months and the conditions are pretty stark I’m afraid,” D. W. Boushard says.

Lewis says it's important to help the homeless by bringing them in to corner haven so they can stay warm.

“Some of the basic needs of people are food, clothing and shelter,” Lewis says. “If you don't have those, then you can't get anything done.”

“We've found a family with three children, an ailing grandfather and a mother in a small minivan,” Boushard says. “We've found men living in auger holes in the sides of mountains.”

Boushard says the cold brings more people in than the snow.

“We’ve talked to people who we have seen who try to find any place we can get out of the wind,” Boushard says.

And Corner Haven is happy to lend a helping hand.

Now if you know someone that needs a warm place to stay in Perry County, You can call the Corner Haven Shelter in Hazard at 606-436-5043.
