Audit On Knott County Questions Nearly $13.5 Million In Spending

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A state audit is questioning nearly the entire 14-(M) million-dollar budget of an eastern Kentucky county with a history of misspending funds, according to documents released today.

State Auditor Crit Luallen says quote -- "It's simply unacceptable that we have this continuing level of mismanagement and possible corruption." -- end quote.

The audit scrutinizing 13-and-a-half (M) million dollars in Knott County's spending came a day after FBI agents raided county offices. The latest audit is the third report since 2004 to raise questions about the county's finances. The FBI wouldn't comment on the reason for yesterday's raid.

Luallen's office referred the audit to the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service, the US Department of Labor and the US Attorney's Office.

I am also ashamed to say I live in Knott County. It has been nothing but corrupt for years. I don't recall a time that it was not. Not only does the politics lack leadership, but we have a major drug problem. The Unite Group needs to come to this county because the sheriff of this county will not arrest the drug dealers even when they are turned in to him. The leadership of this county is more worried about getting the votes instead of trying to make this county safe and enjoyable for our kids and grandkids. This is setting bad examples for everyone in this county. I agree that Randy has done a good job with the youth center and the other activities he is bring to the county, but he should have done this in the lawful way. There is always a wrong way and a right way to do things. Someone has done something wrong for federal agents to have warrants. I just think that if things are handle in the right and lawful way, then things like this would not happen. I also think that the favortism with the county workers and their families should never happen for any reason(Whether its building bridges to their homes or blacktopping their driveways). I also think that county employees using county vechiles should not be happening either. Some people can't even afford a car and here they have two or three in their driveways and using the county vechile to ride around to their other jobs (not county related). I know for a fact that a certain magistrate (edited)last term used one to drive to his other job in Mallie( a strip job). (edited) ended up hiring him back. That is where he went wrong, hiring people like that to help him when they were already corrupt. But hey, that's only my opinion.

I am very sad to admit that these events simply prove that honest people have no chance in the political arena. Thompson and his administartion have made a concerted effort to work on the damage done to the county by bipartisian disputes of the past. I have been very proud to visit my home since his administration. Even if atv and skateboarding or athletics are not your cup of tea, this has been very positive for the youth of Knott Co. I would think anyone with children or grandchildren would have to agree. I do not care if Thompson is Republican, democrat, the voters elected him and I think he does an excellent job. Thompson is coming in the aftermath of many political "wars" if you will, and it is obvious that many people are misinformed about the facts. As for the comments that "sour grapes" could not launch an investigation, oh dear....some are very naive about small town politics. Remember the saying, believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.

Actually, most of the comments I have read are coming from misinformed Knott Countians. Randy Thompson has brought valuable reclaimation to Knott County. Many tourist are coming to the region from different counties and states. The ATV certification, trail riding, and elk viewing are allowing small businesses to get additional money into the county through taxes and the local economy. The grant sponsored atheletic sports center will bring additional people here to bring in money from outside. The water situation has not been good, however that is not Randy Thompson's fault. The flood that occured recently created that and out of date equipment. The flood caused roads to be damaged also. Randy has done nothing but get the roads restored.

I have spent a life time in business and have never seen audit reports as damning as those of Knott County for 2004,2005 and 2006. These reports clearly show that members of the fiscal courts during these periods were derelict in their duties. One can only conclude that members of the fiscal court were either thieves or ignorant beyond belief. The looting of the county for the benefit of a few cannot be defended. Everyone involved should go to jail. The looting of Knott County has been ignored by the local newspaper, which appears to have a political agenda that favors the looters.
