$54 million Secured For Ongoing Dam Repairs

SOMERSET, Ky. (AP) - A federal spending bill includes 54 (M) million dollars for ongoing repairs at the Wolf Creek Dam. The funds are targeted at stopping seepage and stabilizing the lake's level once the fixes are done.

The money was part of the fiscal year 2008 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill, which the House Appropriations Committee approved today.

The Wolf Creek Dam in Russell County confines Lake Cumberland, the largest manmade lake east of the Mississippi River. The Army Corps of Engineers has embarked on a seven-year, 309 (M) million-dollar repair project to control seeping under the dam.

US Representative Hal Rogers, of Somerset, Kentucky, says obtaining these funds is a critical step in getting the dam fixed.

You would think that spending all of these millions of dollars of tax payers money for repairs that are so critical to keep the dam from breaching and possibly destroying thousands that the U.S. Government would want to keep a security detail down there to monitor the whole area due to homeland security reasons. There has been Security there in the past but was let go when the money supposodly ran out. However the U.S.A.C.O.E. does not want to facilitate any funding towards this important aspect and simply feels their is no need for any security detail there which in honesty is a pretty laxed attitude with all the lives and property at stake!
