Officials say three black bears have been found shot to death in the last few weeks, one each in McCreary, Wayne, and Harlan counties.
Black bears are considered protected in Kentucky. In fact, they're making a comeback here, after almost disappearing from a loss of habitat.
This is the time of year when black bears in the wild are on the move, especially during the current drought. They're looking for water, and food, which hasn't been plentiful.
Sometimes bears wander near homes, which scares some people. But the recent killings so no evidence the shots were fired out of fear.
Killing a bear is against the law. If you have any information about bear poaching, you're asked to call Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Enforcement.

We are having problems with black bears. We are told we can't shoot the bears. The bears are supposedly migrating from TN to KY. Where did the bears get their accessories from? The white collars with tracking devices? The chip under the skin to also track if the collar comes off? If they were migrating I don't think they would have these devices. They were purposely set free and I can't understand why animal lovers would set these beautiful but strong and dangerous animals loose in populated areas. We should be allowed to protect ourselves and it not be called poaching. Do we wait until our children are killed before we can fire a shot? They say we have to be defending ourselves. At what point during the encounter with the bear do we decide it is defending. If we wait until we are attacked then I can pretty much say the bear will win. What is this country coming to when animals who are place in areas without their consent have more rights than humans?

The bears around here have become a nuisance animal. They rip into the garbage and try to break into houses. I do not know who shot the bears or for what reason but I do know that they are not just in the woods where they should be anymore.
