Mental Health Leaders Join Forces For Eastern State Hospital Improvements

Lexington, Ky. - The head of an advocacy group for the mentally ill and the top administrator for the controversial Eastern State Hospital in Lexington say they have joined forces to push through the latest proposal to solve longstanding problems at the 185 year old facility.

The Bluegrass Regional Mental-Health and Mental Retardation Board, operators of Eastern State, have proposed building a new $130 million dollar facility that would serve up to 400 patients.

National Alliance for the Mentally ill (NAMI) Lexington Executive Director
Kelly Gunning says the mental health facility has long been the subject of criticism and concerns about patient safety and poor conditions and plansto improve have come and gone unfulfilled. But, says Gunning, not this time, working in tandem with Bluegrass MHMR.

Bluegrass MHMR Executive Director and CEO, Joe Toy, says joining forces with NAMI and working the political powers together greatly increase the chances for a solution to Eastern State.

The proposed facility would also include new programs for veterans and substance abusers. One of the possible sites being talked about for location of a new facility is the University of Kentucky’s Coldstream Research Park.

I am from out of town, my husband is at Eastern State for psychiatric evaluation. Is it a good facility, should I worry about the care he will be given in this facility?

Are you kidding me d? Do you really think that $130 million dollars will create a mansion for 400 patients? Have you not seen the cost of some of the homes nearby that hold what 2-4 people? I know we have single family homes here that cost that much. I agree with some of the more logical comments that is a bargian and well deserved! I too say BRAVO!

$130 million is a bargain for a hospital facility. And a hospital big enough to accomodate 400 patients is huge. That is larger than any hospital currently operating in Lexington except UK and the new hospital UK is building is costing 3-4 times that much and plans for about 600 beds. It's a bargain, and much needed in this area.

I think it's long overdue and a great project. The old, decrepit buildings now definitely don't reflect the great care that's given behind those walls. l30 million may sound like a lot to some, but it's pocket change really, for a facility to house that many patients. Bravo Bluegrass, you have my support.
