Bedford, Ky. - Kentucky State Police busted a "clandestine meth lab" yesterday after a Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife officer literally followed his nose to the criminal activity in rural Trimble County and a 39 year old Bedford man is in custody as a result.

Fish & Wildlife Officer Matt Whelan smelled what he described as "the distinct odor of ammonia" after discovering an abandoned vehicle in a wooded area on Bare Bone Road (HWY 754). Police say an amonia smell is one of the indicators of meth activity.

According to the police report, Kentucky State Trooper Mickey Gonterman, Sergeant Jamie Heller and Trooper Ryan Gosser discovered a path leading from the vehicle to a nearby mobile home where they located the active meth lab and arrested Michael C. Herald, age 39, of Bedford.

Herald was taken to the Carroll County Detention center and charged with Manufacturing methanphetamine, possession, resisting arrest, assault, wanton endangerment and criminal mischief. An investigation is continuing.
