Northern Kentucky Experiences Heavy Storms

FLORENCE, Ky. (AP) - The northern Kentucky and Cincinnati area were pounded by some heavy thunderstorms yesterday, downing power lines and leaving thousands of people without electric service.

As many as 14-thousand, 500 Duke Energy customers lost power, but Duke spokeswoman Kathy Meinke says the number that had fallen to eleven-hundred by late last night. About six-thousand of those affected were in Northern Kentucky, with Florence taking the greatest hit.

In addition to power outages, the storm caused traffic and other problems. Several people were trapped when the storm caused an elevator to shut down at the Carmel Manor retirement home in Fort Thomas, but they were freed within 30 minutes.

A tree fell into the rear of a house in Covington.
