The price of copper is at an all time high and in Clay County vandals are stealing it by cutting down telephone lines and stealing items from homes.
The Clay County Sheriffs Department is trying to go after the copper thieves across the county.
“Right now copper is at an all time high as far as price, depending on where your going to its selling for two twenty to two eighty a pound,” Sheriff Kevin Johnson said.
People are going to great lengths in Clay County and across the region to get their hands on copper.
It’s affecting telephone service, electricity, and ability to call for help if necessary.

“I went home from work the other day and the whole unit was gone, also my lawn mover and a just a regular window unit was gone to just for the copper that was in it,” Janet Jones said.
“They’re getting really bad around here, seems like people are stealing, why I don't know they're stealing,” Tammie Marcum said.
With an increase in copper related thefts, the Clay County Sheriffs Department is stepping up their patrols in the county, looking for anything suspicious.
“Yesterday we arrested Johnathan Roark of Goose Rock for stealing telephone wire from Windstream,” Johnson said
And according to the sheriffs department it’s not just one person stealing copper.
“It's just not the individual we arrested, but also others and arrests are pending on the other individuals,” Sheriff Johnson said.
Authorities say the individuals who are stealing copper in Clay County are doing it mainly at night.
“You know somebody on top of a telephone pole at midnight that's probably not a legit person, so just give us a call,” Sheriff Johnson said

According to the Clay County Sheriffs Department, over the last seven months, Windstream has made five hundred thousand dollars in repairs due to copper theft related incidents.
