How You Can Prevent Animal Fighting

Some are calling it brutal and even cruel, but fighting animals for money isn't rare.

There are some things you can do to help put an end to illegal animal fighting in your neighborhood.

WYMT’s Jeff Gould spoke with a man earlier this afternoon who preferred not to appear on camera because he says that many of his friends and people he knows still go to both dog and cock-fighting events.

So we know this is still happening and is still a problem here in eastern Kentucky, but some people are saying it needs it stop.

“They should be punished,” Jennifer Nagel said.

Jennifer Nagel, Director of the Bell County Animal Shelter said that suspected cases of animal cruelty can actually be reported directly to the shelter.

“We're very happy for anyone to call with information of any kind of animal abuse, and certainly fighting the animals is considered abuse,” Nagel said.

In fact for those not comfortable contacting law enforcement, the Bell County Animal Shelter will commence their own investigation and if necessary contact the appropriate authorities.

“So they can call here and we will keep their name confidential. They can give us any information they have regarding what they think is going on. The more information we have the better,” Nagel said.

The shelter in this story is in Bell County.

I think that if someone has malnurished animals of anykind thats cruelty. If good people are fighting animals is doesnt matter the one that dont agree with it should spend their time fighting crime. Everyone in the world knows their are better things you as a conscernd citizen could be focusing on. Everytime I watch the news and a bulldog or most cases a bulldog mix bites you the media are so fast to screem a pit bull has attacked. Its crazy Im sure it wasnt a true pit bull, a dog isnt a true PIT BULL unless it is actully worked in a pit. I sure wish you would find something else to find to do with your time these kinds of sports have been going on way longer than we have. There is a story about a twelve year old boy who was sold a pistol here in Jacksonville and drugs the next night the found him in a ditch . There are more important things to do. Come on peole lets get real.

Hunting something to eat and chicken fighting is totally different.Cockfighting is barbaric, they let them fight until one is dead or nearly dead and the loser just gets thrown in the trash to die a slow death. How is this not cruel?I can't see any entertainment in this whatsoever, nor dog fighting. It's a sad thing that a man or woman would put a animal in a ring to do his fighting for him.You can bet your (edited) that if I knew of any fights going on anywhere that I will report it.Grow up people and get a life.

Why not let sites like WYMT setup a email link to report animal fights. It can be kept confidential. Or, maybe a regional 800 toll free number to call. I would consider makig a website. If I do, WYMT will be advised of it when completed.

for those that call cock-fighting animal cruelty it NOT that is all the chickens are good for if you turn them alose in the front yard they will fight until they one of the two dies.So what elsie are they good for surely not to EAT,so I would say KEEP ON FIGHTING THEM GUYS.Your the one paying for them not nobody else, they are just mad they cant fight any and won with them. To the guy that talk about this, your NOT A GOOD FRIEND ANY WAY SO STAY OUT OF IT.YOU ARE JUST MAD YOUR CHICKENS ARE NO GOOD.

I think you these people who are against chicken fighting should keep their nose in their own buisness, because I am sure that all of you are doing something that not every one agrees are right. Obviously, you don't know the first thing about chicken fighting. There is no difference in fighting chicken and hunting deer or elk and besides atleast chicken fighters are not fighting the chickens and then taking them home for dinner. That just sick hunting animal to eat. I guarantee you that most of the people who are reporting this don't know how much money are invested in those chickens that are being fit. I tell you animal right people something you get you about four or five fighting roosters and you put them in a lot together and you watch them. They will fight with each other until one is standing. All I am saying that there are worse things in this world than chicken fighting.

I think it's a shame that people are more worried about cockfighting than they are about meth labs. Cockfighting is not hurting our children but drugs are. I think we need to get our priorities straight.
