Oakwood Slapped With Serious Citation Despite New Management

SOMERSET, Ky. (AP) - The state's largest facility for mentally retarded adults has been cited again over the injury of a patient.

According to a citation released today, a staffer at the Communities at Oakwood left a shoe print on a patient's face during an incident on June 17th.

According to the citation, Oakwood officials failed to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident by not questioning the staff
properly and not reviewing video surveillance.

The videotape revealed a caretaker striking the patient.

The Type-A citation is the third issued by state inspectors in the last two months against Bluegrass Mental Health-Mental Retardation Board.

How can you say shut it down? Do you have any one there? Have you ever visited there? The state run home in Frankfort used to treat these people like caged animals and were allowed to. Oakwood is the best thing that ever happened to these people. Just like any other work environment, workers have to do their job correctly and abuse is not part of that job. My family visits this facility all year long. Our visits are at random. We have never witness anything like what is going on. Neither has our family member shown any signs of abuse. So before you say shut it down, get all the facts. These people are humans and deserve better than some people want them to have. My family member would not be ther if it wasn't necessary. We love them. Where were your opinions when some of these came from state homes that treated them like animals? Oakwood is a wonderful place, but sounds to me like someone wants the land for other uses that could make them lots of money.

I think the state should take back the operations of Eastern State Hospital. Clean and fix it up like it was when it was state run. Move all of those patients at Oakwood to ESH, and SHUT OAKWOOD DOWN!

The news is very good at reporting alleged abuse from the staff at Oakwood, but just today a client at Oakwood, kicked a staff worker, knocking her unconcious and possibly breaking her neck. Why don't we hear about stuff like that? The workers at Oakwood have a very hard job. It takes a special person to work with the mentally handicapped. Most of the clients at Oakwood are very dangerous. Many are sexual predators and very violent. I know for a fact that the clients at Oakwood are taken very good care of. I'm not saying that abuse doesn't happen, but it also happens at hospitals and nursing homes every day but that's not reported on the news.
