Keeping Athletes Safe During Extreme Heat

School will be underway soon in several central Kentucky communities some are already back in class. Even those that aren't are still gearing up with sports teams and marching bands in full practice.

27 NEWSFIRST talked with Jessamine County schools about new safeguards put in place to keep athletes and students safe when practicing in the intense summer heat.

The field is empty now because football, soccer and any team that practices outside usually does it in the early morning or evening hours to avoid the intense heat.

School officials say the new policy is not in reaction to anything, it's a proactive step.

All teams and organizations are included under the policy and doesn't just affect practices. If it's too hot or the committee deems it too dangerous at game time it will be postponed as well.
