PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - 18-year-old Paul Young is in the Pulaski County Detention Center after investigators say he attempted to kill his friend's parents while they slept. In a newly released 9-1-1 call, Laura Phelps is heard describing the scene that unfolded in her bedroom early Wednesday morning.
"Now who's been stabbed?"
"I'm not sure, my husband (Edwin Phelps) has still got the guy down in the headlock. He has actually, he busted down our bedroom door."
"Okay, now, who is this person?"
"His name is Paul Young. It's not the first time he's ever been in trouble."
"No! He does not live here!"
"Okay, did he break into the house?"
"That's what we don't know when. We had just woke up with him crashing through our bedroom door."
That's only a small portion of the 9-1-1 call Phelps made as investigators are withholding the rest at this time.
Investigators say Young was asked by the Phelps' 17-year-old son to kill his parents. Pulaski County deputies even say it was the son who let Young into the family's home, but their plot was spoiled.
"The husband had just gotten out of bed to use the restroom when the suspect barged through the door, that I think gave the victim the edge in subduing the suspect," said Lt. Brett Whitaker, of the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office.
Edwin Phelps is in fair condition at UK Hospital, in Lexington, after being stabbed several times, but still the 43-year-old father somehow found the strength to overpower and pin down the 18-year-old attacker. Laura Phelps was not hurt in the attack, and while she declined to comment on camera she said in a phone call that her husband's actions saved her life.
Neighbors were shocked to learn what happened, saying the couple is very sweet and they foster children. One neighbor said the Phelps have even adopted three kids, including the 17-year-old whose name is not being released at this time.
The teen is charged with two counts of criminal solicitation to commit murder. He son and Young are said to be students at Southwestern High School in Pulaski County.
Investigators say they are still working to determine a motive for the murder plot.
