City Responds to Scorching Heat

Triple digit temperatures mixed with intense humidity are making for scorching conditions.

Now people are coming up with ways to try and beat the heat.

The city of Lexington braces itself for the hottest day we've seen this year. With temperatures climbing into record setting highs, Mayor Jim Newberry took several steps to offer heat relief to citizens.

Some of these steps included opening heat relief stations and cutting admission prices to pools.

The Mayor’s action came in response to a heat advisory issued for Fayette County through Thursday by the National Weather Service.

Heat relief and refreshment centers, offering air-conditioned shelter and water, are:

· Dunbar Recreation Center, 545 N. Upper St., open until 7 p.m.

· Castlewood Park Community Center, 201 Castlewood Dr., open until 7 p.m.

· Senior Citizens Center, 1530 Nicholasville Rd., open until 7 p.m.

· Black and Williams Center, 498 Georgetown St., open until 7 p.m.

· Salvation Army, 722 W. Main St., open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for heat relief measures.

· Hope Center, 360 W. Loudon Ave., open 24 hours/day. Primarily for homeless males, but can accommodate others during the heat advisory.

LexTran offers free bus rides for individuals going to a heat relief center. Citizens can call LexTran at (859) 253-4636 to get the location of the nearest bus stop. Individuals who need special transportation assistance due to disabilities can call LexTran to arrange for special pickup.

Normal pool hours, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. (except at Picadome, Douglass and Constitution, which close at 6 p.m.), remain in effect, but admission rates will be cut in half during the heat advisory. For more information about pools call (859) 288-2900.
