Woman Accused Of Abandoning Infant Pleads Not Guilty

An eastern Kentucky woman, charged after police say she abandoned a newborn baby on the steps of a church, entered a not guilty plea in court on Monday morning.

29-year-old Angela Dawn Brooks is charged with abandonment of a minor and wanton endangerment.

Last Tuesday, police received an anonymous tip that a baby had been left in sweltering heat.

We're told the baby boy is in good health and has been placed in foster care. Brooks is in the Boyd County Detention Center on a 75,000 dollar bond.

I think a little grace and mercy should be extended here, especially if she was advised by a crisis center that leaving her baby at the church and calling 911 was what she should do (as has been reported today). She made sure the baby was found quickly, and I admire her for trying to do the right thing. Even we may not understand or agree with her reasoning, her baby is fine because of her actions, rather than dead. Perhaps there needs to be more effort given to educating the public on the correct/accepted places as defined by the law. I bet lots of people would think a church would be considered a safe place.
