An eastern Kentucky family is grieving after a man drowns in a pond near his home.

WYMT was the only TV station on the scene as divers recovered the body of 78 year old William Robinson Junior in the Lily community of Laurel County.

78-year-old William Robinson Jr., or "Red" as friends called him, had a home away from home in the pond behind his house on Whitley-Laurel Road.

“He'd get so tickled when he'd go down there and catch a fish, and he'd come up and eat it that night. He'd always like fresh fish. He didn't eat that turtle but he did like turtles!” David Robinson said.

Tuesday afternoon Robinson made his last visit to the pond.

“At 5:05 p.m. we located Mr. Robinson in the pond approximately 15 feet from the bank, Brian Reams said.

“He fixed a rock down there for him to fish on and he walked down there quite a bit, and he was not too steady on his feet. That's the reason he used two canes. I believe he just fell in,” Robinson said.

Officials say they don't suspect foul play.

Robinson's family says his heart problems didn't overcome his natural spunk.

The Robinsons say "Red" died in the place he visited most, doing what he enjoyed for decades.

The family says Robinson lived in Laurel County since he was a child.

Funeral arrangements haven't been made.
