Part Of History Dismantled In Downtown Lexington

A part of Lexington's past is being taken down, piece by piece.

The old Vaughan Tobacco Warehouses dates back almost 3 quarters of a century. It once stretched for almost a mile off West Main Street. The demolition has begun and 400,000 pounds of wood from the warehouses were hauled away by train Friday and will be recycled to build houses.

With all the lofts and new night spots being built not far from the old warehouse district, neighbors are hoping for some revitalization in the area, but it remains to be seen what will take the place of the warehouses.

Warehouse owner Derek Vaughan says he's weighing several options, but they need to get through the demolition process first and that's going to take more than a year.
