An eastern Kentucky man is in the hospital after police say his mother shot him several times.

WYMT was the only TV station at the scene as police collected evidence from their home in the Clutts area of Harlan County.

28-year-old Joshua Luke Davis was conscious despite a gunshot wound to the chest when police arrived at his home on Gogich Street.

Police say the shooter was his mother, Kathryn Davis.

“As I was arriving they were taking one of the victims out and flying him out from the scene,” Sergeant Jason Adams said.

Police say Davis was the only person hurt.

They say his grandmother was also home when a domestic dispute escalated between the family members.

“To my knowledge he was shot more than once, but we're not exactly sure how many times he was shot,” Sergeant Adams said.

So far, no charges have been filed.

Family members and friends did not want to go on camera, but say they believe the shooting was self defense.

“At this point in time we're still investigating it to find out if there will be charges at a later date, and still trying to determine exactly what happened,” Sergeant Adams said.

Police say they may send the case to a grand jury.

Joshua Luke Davis was flown to Holston Valley Hospital in Tennessee Friday afternoon.

A relative tells us he is in stable condition.

This man that everyone is talking about is my brother. I am very proud of him for being so strong with the great Lord. He is a wonderful brother & uncle. And as far as my mother you think she has a happy life,NO she thinks of what happend everyday. That is bad enough her own boy, come on let her be right with the Lord too. I know it would be a great thing if our family was to meet in the big blue. I can't wait until I see all my young loved ones again. Kathy (MOM) if you see this I will always love you. Look into your heart and find a way, you are doing good keep your head up, God has a plan for us all. love & miss you bubby. Your sister Mel.

I think that some things are better left unsaid, like the derrogatory comments about the mother. The details of this story were presented in such a way that the mother sounds like she was in a psychotic rage and took it out on her poor defenseless son. If all of the details were presented, I am sure the comments would echo a different sentiment.

it is sad that something like this has to happen, but the bad thing is this kind of stuff happens alot. i can't imagine hurting my own children, but what scares me is the fact that my two children were in school not far at all away from there when it happened. i mean the school is only a couple streets away from gogich street.

Well, if the shooting was in fact self defense, then maybe he'll learn not to mess with mama anymore. If not self defense, I bet he stays clear of her from here on out!To get to the point of shooting her own son, it makes you wonder what has he put her through to push her to shooting him.Sometimes family treats you worse than strangers.Sad, either way.

It sadens my heart to think a mother has to defend herself from one of her children. I pray that God will keep his hand upon this family.

I have known Kathy for years, not close just know her and I am not surprised at this at all, her mother is wonderful but Kathy has been in and out of trouble since the 70's. I also do not know the son so have no idea what kind of person he is but the mother does have problems.
