Dog Treats Removed From Shelves; Reports of Sick Dogs

Some dog treats sold at Wal-Mart stores around the country are under the microscope this morning.

A company spokesman says the company quietly stopped selling two brands of dog treats in July after customers voiced concerns the products may have sickened their pets. In one case, a woman says her pet died.

Both are made in China. The treats are chicken jerky strips from Import Ping-Yang Pet Product Company and chicken jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading.

Wal-Mart has not announced a recall but says it's testing the product.

Wal-Mart pulls 2 kinds of dog treats from its shelves

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - It could be another blow to Chinese imports.

Wal-Mart quietly stopped selling two brands of dog treats after customers complained the treats sickened their dogs. But it hasn't announced a recall.

A company spokeswoman says the treats are being tested.

The world's largest retailer started pulling two types of chicken jerky from two different Chinese importers in late July. It also placed a computerized block on all cash registers to prevent workers from selling the products.

Wal-Mart's action follows a massive pet food recall in March, when retailers began pulling products made in China that included the chemical melamine. That's a byproduct of several pesticides.

Philadelphia television station WPVI reports that a woman claims her 2-year-old Chihuahua died after eating the dog treats. An autopsy revealed that the dog died of an infection caused by toxic bacteria.

do a google search for melamine and you'll find this has been going on for a long time and has been known about for months - according to Wikipedia, it's an common "open secret" in China as a means for them to get rid of a nasty environmental pollutant...they just package it in animal foods because it can appear as protein (which it's not)

I have unwittingly bought those for my dog and she has been sick but I thought it was the heat. They could at least tell us the brand, a picture or something. "Quietly pulling them" doesnt cut it. I have bought them this month! I will never buy any dog products from them again and though I only spend about 60.00 a month, if we all "quietly withdrew our business" it would show up!

I love this, Wal-mart "Quietly" started pulling them from the shelves. Who really cares about the treats already sold that were still being given to pets in homes. This "pulling from shelves" happens in July here it is August 21 and this is when it becomes public? Sickening.
