Authorities Crackdown On College Bars

Kentucky's office of alcoholic beverage control says it's keeping a closer eye on bars that cater to college students. Officials hope the move will prevent underage alcohol sales.

They say more A.B.C. investigators will check up on bars to make sure the laws are enforced. Bars can face fines of more than $1700 each time alcohol is sold to an underage person. They say underage drinkers can also face criminal charges.

The community must understand that some bars give their best effort in deterring underage drinking. Bar security have no legal authority and can only turn away the trespassers. Sometimes as many as 100 underage college students per night will attempt to gain entry into a bar with very legitimate identifications. Some kids gain the courage to take a friends or family members info to the DMV and have a real state drivers license issued with their actual picture on it...how are bars to know? Kids with fake I.D.'s keep multiple forms of "proof" that the person on the I.D. is really them...deactivated debit cards, social security cards, student I.D's, passports, etc. I will agree, an irresponsible bar operation should be punished accordingy, but don't just smack a kid on the hand with a petty fine when a business owner who is trying to do the right thing has so much to lose. Start taking these kids drivers license for six months for the offense and then judge the bar on their diligence

This is Bull They say this every few years. you can sit in your car and watch underage drunks drive into the neighborhood around these bars. A lot are drunk when they arrive. Just park on Jersey Street any Tuesday night and watch the show. Pathetic that these operators sell to almost anybody. Worse that laws are not enforced in these places.

I am glad they are cracking down. I had a cousin get busted last year and was faced with some heavy fines himself and could have gotten into a lot more trouble, as far as we know the bar was never fined, b/c he was busted outside of the establishment on the way back to campus. There are a lot of underage kids that look older these days too, not all IDs are looked at cimply b/c they look older, and some ids are passed over even when they know they are fake b/c well, they will make money off of them. Just my thoughts on the situation. Good luck on the crack down.
