Court Rules Louisville Lawyer Must Pay For Bungling Lawsuit

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Louisville lawyer has lost a $5 million lawsuit in a Jefferson Circuit Court case. A jury found yesterday that Steven Keeney bungled a lawsuit filed by a Kentucky woman who lost her home and possessions the result of a small-plane crash.

The verdict included $3.5 million in punitive damages against Keeney, who was twice suspended from practice in the 1990s. After deliberating for three hours, the jury found by a 10-2 vote that because of Keeney's negligence, his client, Brenda Osborne of Middlesboro, lost a federal court case stemming from the accident.

The ruling note that she could have recovered about $1.3 million. It awarded her that amount, as well as $250,000 for mental anguish.
