Banner From Ky. Unit Used In Iraq Stolen During Football Game

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A vinyl blue banner bearing the "Kentucky Unbridled Spirit" logo that flew in Iraq was stolen, apparently during last weekend's Kentucky-Eastern Kentucky football game.

The banner was flying over a tailgating spot outside Commonwealth Stadium, where Daryl Casey, who served as a helicopter crew chief with B Company, 2-147th Aviation unit in Balad, Iraq, left it after going into the game.

Casey, who served in Iraq from February to October 2006, got the 3-foot-by-7-foot banner from a state Finance and Administration Cabinet employee and flew it at his air base. Casey said he accidentally grabbed the banner while packing for the football game.

"It just meant so much to us," he said. "It was a real thing of pride to us to kind of show off who we were."

Once he and his friends realized the banner was with them at the game, they decided to display it, Casey said.

When they came out, the banner was gone. And Casey's upbeat mood after the Wildcats' win quickly soured. Nothing else was taken from the tailgating site, Casey said.

"It broke my heart, literally. It's funny how something so insignificant can mean so much to you," Casey said.
