A southern Kentucky county official is arrested after police say he stole copper.

Police say Whitley County Emergency Management Director Jerry Powers tried to take the copper after a tractor trailer accident on I-75.

Emergency Management Director Jerry Powers originally denied stealing the copper, but eventually admitted it to police.

Powers was responding to an accident Tuesday evening on I-75 just north of exit 15.

A truck carrying copper wire lost control and went down an embankment and injured the driver.

Witnesses tell police, Jerry Powers took the copper and put it in his emergency management vehicle.

Police have also found copper hidden near the scene.

Jerry Powers was arrested and charged with theft by unlawful taking.

Whitley County Jail officials say he was released a couple hours after his arrest Tuesday night.

The Whitley County Judge Executive released a statement and says the county is also investigating and powers is on administrative leave pending the outcome of that investigation.

Police say their investigation is ongoing and it's likely they'll be arresting others who responded to that accident scene.
