Aviation club gathers for Parkflyer Fly-in

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Saturday members of the Lexington Model Aviation Club gathered at Jacobson Park in Lexington for their second annual Parkflyer Fly-In.

Members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics were invited to fly their model airplanes and helicopters, and spectators were invited to watch the miniature aircraft fly above the park.

Saturday's event happens after a deadly accident in Queens, NY on Thursday where a teenager was killed by an electric-powered RC helicopter.

WKYT asked an organizer of today's event about safety measures in place.

Mickey Breuning says, "They are very dangerous even though they are small airplanes and have small motors they don't seem like they'll do much damage, but the props are very sharp and they can cut people and injure spectators. So we try to promote safety in any way we can."

Organizers say the model helicopter involved in the fatal accident in New York was bigger and more sophisticated than those allowed at today's event.
