NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Organizers said Veterans Day is a day to celebrate those who came home, but to also honor those who've passed on. One family only recently lost their soldier. They took the opportunity to show the surviving veterans just how much they care.

With a band, a bugle, and a rifle salute, the ceremony's organizers did everything they could to show the veterans from Jessamine County and beyond how they feel.

Some of the veterans saw the ceremony with their own eyes, but some weren't actually in the seats.

"I want to show them the support that I know Derek would have wanted to show them," said Erica Tolson.

Tolson's boyfriend, Derek Tharp, was a National Guard soldier. He died in February, but Erica came today to honor his extended military family. His mother, Marilyn, agreed.

"It's a feeling of love, appreciation, kindness," Marilyn Tharp said.

While they remembered Derek together, they also wanted all the other veterans to know they're appreciated.

"We're thanking them now. Might have not got thanked back then. Now we're showing them that we appreciate them," said Tolson.

Organizers estimated there were between 300 and 400 people went to the ceremony.
