'Career criminal' back behind bars in Pulaski County

PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office says they've linked 30-year-old John Edward Cummings to at least two thefts in the last week, but they think he could be behind others as well.

Deputy Cody Cundiff with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office said, "We just know that Mr. Cummings appears to be a 'career criminal.' He doesn't appear to do anything other than trying to commit another offense, usually theft being his genre."

Cummings was released from prison in July of 2013, after being convicted of stealing multiple trailers. Then on Friday, deputies say Cummings was caught on camera and accused of stealing a trailer from a business on Larry's Lane in Somerset.

"He backs up to the trailer, connects to it and drives off with it," described Deputy Cundiff, "The trailer is still yet to be found, but we did recover the truck that matches identically inside the video."

Investigators say when Cummings is free, they can tell, because he creates such a nuisance for them.

"We usually have the tendency to see a higher rate of crime," explained Cundiff, adding that the crimes usually spike where the suspect is known to be. In Cummings case, that includes Somerset and the southern part of Pulaski County.

Cummings is now charged with stealing the trailer and he's also accused of breaking into a home on Thursday of last week. However, that may only the start, as investigators have numerous other theft cases that they say reflect Cummings' style.

"We really are able to start seeing a strong correlation to the kind of crimes he commits and other crimes that are being reported," said Cundiff.

With this guy back in jail, it would seem his line of work is on hold, for now. Although the work will still continue for deputies who say they've yet to find any of the stolen items. They're asking for the public to come forward if anyone has had a utility trailer stolen, or if they've recently bought anything from Cummings that could be tied to these cases.
