Investigation yields no answers for deadly fire

KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Yellow tape still circles the house that's hardly been touched since the morning of March 9th, when a deadly fire broke out taking the lives of two adults and five children. Time has passed, but the memories are still fresh.

"Yeah, there ain't a day that goes by that I don't think about it," said Jacob Garrison, a cousin to the victim, Jesse Disney.

18 days later eight crosses stand in front of the home. There's one for Disney, his pregnant fiance Nina Asher, her three kids, their two friends, and one white cross for the baby never born.

"I'm just sorry for the rest of the family, all of the families, especially all of those kids. That really hurts my feelings," expressed Garrison, who also lives just yards away from the home and was one of the first to run to the house to help.

"It just seemed like it was one of the longest days of my life."

Since then he, like many others, waited for answers to what started the fire. Today, it became clear that those answers may never come as investigators ruled the fire an accident but say there was not enough evidence left behind to determine what started the flames.

"It was a bad tragedy," stated Garrison.

For the friends and families of the victims, seeing the house is still a difficult sight. They say it's a daily reminder of the lives lost, and without any answers to bring closure they say the mystery of what happened will only linger longer in their minds.

"Just shocked really," answered Garrison when he learned of the news, "(I) just didn't know what it was, it'd be nice to know."

The cause may not be known, but the effects will never be forgotten. Since the fire, one family member said he went out and bought three smoke detectors for his house.
