Centre receives $1 million gift to support travel

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Centre College has received a $1 million donation to support international travel by students and faculty.

The liberal arts college in Danville says three-fourths of the gift from an anonymous donor will be used for study abroad grants for students. The grants will go to students who complete two years of foreign language study at Centre and want to visit a country where that language is spoken.

The rest of the gift will help fund travel by Centre's language faculty who want to visit countries where the language they teach is spoken.

Centre offers courses in Chinese, French, German, Catalan, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Latin and Spanish. Such languages as Arabic and Aramaic can be pursued as independent study courses.

The grants funded by the endowment gift will begin next academic year.
