Changes possible for busy Jessamine County road

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) It’s become a popular route for drivers trying to get between two major highways south of Lexington.

So now, state transportation leaders say it's time to expand Brannon Road, but state leaders want the public to help figure out the best way to do that.

Each day, more than 5,000 drivers travel on Brannon Road, which is a 3-mile stretch of road connecting US-68 and US-27. But the curvy, steep and narrow roadway isn't exactly suited for the heavy traffic running between Nicholasville Road and Harrodsburg Road.

On Thursday, the state Transportation Cabinet held a meeting to ask the public what safety improvements they would like to see made on that road.

“People know that there’s an issue and they want to see what can be done about it. As long as we can all agree that there is a safety issue that needs to be addressed then we can go from there,” said Joshua Samples with the state Transportation Cabinet. Samples is the project director overseeing Brannon Road improvements.

In the last decade, 263 accidents have happened on Brannon Road; 102 of them were collisions with fixed objects near the roadway itself.

“That’s where the most serious accidents happen right with those collisions of the fixed objects,” said Ida Maggard, who says she drives on Brannon Road daily.

Drivers say other safety issues on that road include narrow driving lanes, poor visibility, speeding, a railroad crossing and heavy traffic.

Transportation officials say so far, no decisions have been made on the type of roadway it will become.

“We’re at the very beginning of design process so it is not too late for people to put input in,” Samples said.

Samples says the Transportation Cabinet has also set up a Brannon Road Facebook page that will allow the public to monitor updates and express their opinions on potential changes on the road.

Officials say the public's opinion will directly impact the future of Brannon Road.

Transportation officials plan to hold another meeting on how to improve Brannon Road early next year.
